The idea of human rights is as simple as it is powerful: all people have a right to be treated with dignity. Human rights are the foundation that enables all individuals to lead dignified and independent lives, free from abuse and discrimination.These basic rights encompass civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as the collective rights of peoples.
In line with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, Neste has made a commitment to respect human rights and remediate adverse human rights impacts throughout our business operations and value chains. Our Human Rights Principle is informed by the International Bill of Human Rights, the International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles, the Children's Rights and Business Principles and UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. They are also informed by the UN Global Compact, to which we are a signatory.
Our Human Rights Principle set the path and standards for a rights-based approach in all of Neste’s business decisions. Our seven human rights principles are: fair employment, health & safety, equality, rights of children & young workers, forced labour, fair treatment, and social & economic development, including rights of minorities and free, prior and informed consent of indigenous peoples. We expect all of our business partners to share our commitment to respect and remediate, and our ambition to promote positive human rights impacts.
We take seriously any allegations that human rights are not properly respected in our business or supply chains, and encourage individuals or communities who have reason to believe such activity is taking place to raise their concerns, without fear of retaliation, via the Neste Ethics Online.
Neste respects the dignity, wellbeing and human rights of our employees, the workers in our supply chain, the communities in which we operate and those affected by our operations.
We recognise that while states have a duty to protect human rights, companies have a responsibility to respect human rights. This means carrying out due diligence to avoid infringing on the rights of others and addressing the adverse impacts of our global operations.
In 2016, we partnered with BSR (Business for Social Responsibility) to conduct a corporate-wide human rights impact assessment. This assessed the actual and potential human rights impacts linked to our operations, and the effects of our business activities on our rights-holders, including Neste employees, contractors’ employees, supply chain workers, community members, and customers.
In following up on the results of our impact assessment, we developed and published the Neste Human Rights Principle in 2017.
Recognising a need to strengthen the upholding of human rights in our own operations, in 2018-19 we worked with Enact to conduct a human rights due diligence gap assessment based on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The gap assessment focused on two of Neste’s common functions, Human Resources and Indirect Procurement (including NES), as well as the business area Marketing & Services.
